EU Delays Sustainability Regulations: What Chemical Companies Need to Know

Apr 1, 2025

The EU Council has approved delays to two cornerstone sustainability policies: the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). While this postpones mandatory compliance, it does not reduce the urgency of action—particularly for chemical companies.

What’s Changing?

The CSRD will apply to a wider range of companies, demanding detailed disclosures on ESG performance. The CSDDD introduces due diligence obligations on environmental and human rights risks across supply chains. The delay means companies have more time to prepare, but it also adds ambiguity and can lead to uneven readiness across the sector.

Why It Still Matters

Even with timelines shifting, the direction of travel is clear: greater scrutiny, more transparency, and stronger expectations from regulators, investors, and partners. Many companies—especially multinationals—are already building reporting practices in anticipation. Falling behind now could risk future non-compliance and missed opportunities.

Implications for Chemical Companies

Chemical companies, due to their high environmental impact and complex supply chains, will be under particular pressure. Expectations include:

  • Mapping and managing value chain risks
  • Providing data-driven evidence of environmental performance
  • Demonstrating progress against sustainability targets

Those who start now will have time to build robust systems and avoid last-minute overhauls.

Preparing for What’s Ahead

This is an ideal moment to take stock of current capabilities, identify gaps, and begin aligning internal processes with future reporting requirements. Start with questions like:

  • Do we understand our environmental hotspots?
  • Are we tracking the right sustainability metrics?
  • How prepared are we to respond to stakeholder scrutiny?
